Home care costs

Your savings, investments and expenses

When calculating your charge for care at home, we include

  • bank, building society and savings accounts
  • premium bonds
  • shares, calculated at market value
  • national savings certificates
  • annuity income
  • savings or Income bonds
  • trusts, we require the terms and conditions
  • any other savings or investments
  • the value of a second property.

We exclude

  • saving and investments to the value of £10,000.

Please put the full amount of your savings and investments on the form and we will deduct £10,000 from the total.

Your expenses

You need to tell us what you pay

  • rent
  • mortgage payments on first homes, not second homes
  • Council Tax
  • Child Support Agency payments
  • care or support charges, if you are already paying the Council for another care or support service
  • CATS alarm or telecare
  • Some costs associated with a disability may be treated as expenses, such as a prescribed diet.

When we work out your charge we include a personal allowance of

  • £218 per week for a single person
  • £332 for a couple.

This allowance is to cover every day living expenses such as food and heating and lighting.
