Changes already in place
We already made some changes during 2020 and 2021 as part of our response to the covid pandemic. These gave buses more priority on some roads
- A89 at Newbridge - a bus lane going into the city approaching the junction with the B800 near Newbridge Industrial Estate
- A8 Gogar underpass with a bus lane going into the city
- A71 roundabout at Hermiston park and ride with traffic signals for buses from the park and ride onto the roundabout
- Howden Hall Road by extending the existing bus lane approaching Kaimes crossroad
- Captain’s Road where we added a bus lane going west on Captain’s Road approaching Kaimes crossroad
- Gilmerton crossroads where we added waiting restrictions at Drum Street and Newtoft Street to allow traffic move more easily
- Duddingston Park South where we added a bus lane between Bonnybridge Drive and Mountcastle Drive South, linking the existing bus lane on the approach to the Milton Road junction.
Bus companies say that these changes
- improved bus journey times
- made buses more reliable.
In November 2022, we asked councillors to agree to keep these changes for another 18 months using the Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) process. With this, we can try them over a longer period when traffic is closer to 'normal' levels. We will check to see how they are working between June and December 2023. We will look at any affect they are having on general traffic and public transport journeys.

During the six months you can

If you need help
After the trial
We will look at all the feedback alongside the data we collect on road use and bus journey times. We will use this to recommend whether we keep or remove the changes. We will report this to the Council’s Transport and Environmental Committee.
